What To Expect When Watching Gonzaga Basketball
By: Sami Valade
Hello, I am a huge fan of the Gonzaga basketball team. The excitement surrounding this team has been amazing and I am very excited to be part of it all. I will be blogging about how my experience is with the basketball team. I will be writing about my expectations for this season and what I think about the team and also about their performance during games.
I am very excited for this season. It is going to be a great year for everyone involved. The team is looking good so far and there are many exciting players on it this season. I am looking forward to seeing how they perform against other teams in the NCAA tournament.
The first game of the season is against Michigan State. This is a very important game as it will determine if Gonzaga can get into the top 25 rankings or not. This game could also determine whether they make it into the Sweet Sixteen or not. If they lose this game then they may not have another shot at making it because there are no other teams in their league that are ranked higher than them right now (aside from Duke).
After playing Michigan State, Gonzaga plays against Stanford next week which should be another tough
In the past few years, Gonzaga basketball has become one of the most talked about mid-major programs in the country.
As a fan of the team, I love hearing people talk about an under-the-radar program like mine. What I don’t love is when they talk about us like they know what we’re all about.
In an attempt to educate all you non-Zag fans out there, I have decided to write this article explaining what it’s like to watch Gonzaga basketball for a fan of the team.
I’m a big college basketball fan. There is no other sport that I love more than college hoops. My favorite team to watch is the Gonzaga Bulldogs. For those of you who are not avid fans, Gonzaga is a small school that is located in Spokane, Washington. They are in the West Coast Conference, which many people would consider a “mid-major” conference.
However, they have been one of the best teams in the nation for the last several years. They have made it to the NCAA tournament every year since 1999 and have appeared in the Sweet Sixteen (the third round of the NCAA tournament) every year since 2000. In fact, they were just one game away from appearing in the Final Four (the final four teams in the tournament) last year. This year, they are once again one of the best teams in the country and have an outside shot at winning it all this year.
Watching Gonzaga play is always exciting because you never know what will happen during their games. Sometimes they lose a lot of games that most people would think they should win (such as losing to Pepperdine last week). Other times, they win games that no one thinks they can win (such as beating Connecticut last month).
If you ever
I know that the first thing everyone is going to think when they click on this blog is “Hey, it’s a Gonzaga basketball blog. Should I really waste my time reading this?” To which I would answer, “Of course you should.” I’m not saying that because I love Gonzaga basketball and therefore want everyone else to love it too.
I’m saying it because after watching countless hours of Zags basketball over the past four years I’ve come to realize that there are certain things you can expect when watching a game. Certain things that are so predictable that you don’t even need to be watching the game to know what’s happening.
I grew up in a small town called Rathdrum, ID. I am the oldest of three sisters and while I always played on boys sports teams with my sisters, I never really picked up an interest in sports. My dad is a Gonzaga grad and we would watch every game together, but I didn’t really understand much about it. We would go to the games every once in a while and even though I didn’t care what was happening, I had so much fun going.
I moved to Spokane for school and starting going to the games more often. That is when my love for Gonzaga basketball started. While there is only one big basketball game that everyone talks about, there are multiple games throughout the year that are just as exciting.
There are some things that you should expect when you attend a Gonzaga basketball game or just watch them on TV. Here are some of those things:
The Gonzaga Bulldogs will play their last home game of the season Thursday night against BYU. The Zags earned a win against the Cougars in Provo earlier this month, winning 90-76.
Gonzaga looks to keep their unblemished home record alive, with their last four games at home producing a margin of victory of over 30 points per game. The Zags are also looking for revenge for their loss at BYU last year on senior night.
The Bulldogs bring an exceptionally talented offense to the table that boasts two players in the top five in scoring in the WCC. As well as two of the top three in field goal percentage and three players in the top 5 in rebounds per game.
Welcome to a new series here on the blog. In this series, we will take a look at each of the opponents that the Gonzaga Bulldogs will face in 2016-17. We will see where they are coming from, what we can expect when playing them, and maybe a prediction on the game itself. I’ll also try to give an idea as to what kind of team they are. Are they a high-scoring offense or a defensive powerhouse?
So let’s get started with the first one:
