The list of the top 5 soccer players of all time is not an easy list to make, but extremely fun. It is a great discussion topic and will lead to passionate debate. I am going to go out on a limb here and say that any soccer fan who disagrees with my list is completely wrong! There are many factors that go into this top 5 list, but in the end, it comes down to one thing: Who was the best at their craft?

In this list, I will examine how these players performed in international tournaments and club play. I will also look at how their teammates viewed them and how opposing coaches prepared for these players. Did they dominate the game or did they just have a lot of skill?

Here are my top 5 picks, in no particular order:

There are many great soccer players in the world. One of the most recent is Lionel Messi. However, Messi isn’t mentioned in the top 5 soccer players to ever grace the game. In fact, there are several players that have better careers than him and who were more influential on and off the field. I’m going to list my top 5 soccer players of all time.

First is Diego Maradona. Maradona was one of the best dribblers to ever touch a ball. He used his small stature to weave through defenses and always find a way to score. He was also a magician with the ball at his feet and could make defenders look silly with his footwork. Maradona played on some of the best teams in the world such as Barcelona and Napoli and he always found a way to shine even when surrounded by other great players. He was also a part of one of the greatest World Cup teams in history: Argentina 86′. There will never be another player like Maradona, he had an unmatched passion for the game that made him one of the best ever.

Pele was born on October 23, 1940 in Minas Gerais, Brazil. He has helped Brazil win three World Cups, scored 1281 goals in 1363 games, and lead his club team Santos to two Copa Libertadores titles. He is considered by most to be the greatest player of all time.


Diego Armando Maradona was born October 30, 1960 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He lead Argentina to victory in the 1986 World Cup scoring 5 goals and winning the Golden Ball as player of the tournament. He also won a FIFA Player of the Century award (along with Pele) and guided Napoli to their first ever Serie A title in 1987. Unfortunately he was banned from playing soccer for 15 months after failing a drug test in 1991.


Zinedine Zidane was born on June 23, 1972 in Marseille, France. In 1998 he guided France to World Cup glory and won the Golden Ball for player of the tournament
