Volleyball is a team sport where two teams of six players are separated by a net. Each team tries to score points by grounding a ball on the other team’s court under organized rules. It has been a part of the official program of the Summer Olympic Games since 1964. The complete rules are extensive. But simply, play proceeds as follows: a player on one of the teams begins a ‘rally’ by serving the ball (tossing or releasing it and then hitting it with a hand or arm), from behind the back boundary line of the court, over the net, and into the receiving team’s court. The receiving team must not let the ball be grounded within their court. The team may touch the ball up to 3 times but individual players may not touch the ball twice consecutively. Typically, the first two touches are used to set up for an attack, an attempt to direct the ball back over the net in such a way that the serving team is unable to prevent it from being grounded in their court. The rally continues, with each team allowed as many as three consecutive touches, until either (1):

Volleyball is one of the most popular sports around the world, and while you may think its an easy game to play, it is actually quite a demanding sport. You have to be coordinated and strong to be good at this game.

Just a few days ago, there was a volleyball tournament in San Francisco which lasted for three days. The name of the tournament is Bay Area Beach Classic, or BABC for short. If you are familiar with volleyball tournaments, then you already know that Bay Area Beach Classic is a pretty famous one, especially in Northern California. There were around 300 teams, who competed in this tournament, both men and women. Now thats a lot of people!

While I was there during the second day of the tournament, I got to see some really intense games that went on for hours; it was really fun watching these players trying their best to win the title of “the best volleyball team”. However, it wasn’t just about who won; I met some really nice people who played with passion and loved their sport.

If you don’t know, the NorCal Summer tournament is the largest annual beach volleyball tournament in Northern California. The tournament is played at Santa Cruz beach and thousands of people come out to watch the games. The tournament has been around for over 30 years and this year was a huge milestone for the event–it was just named an AVP qualifier!

An AVP qualifier means that athletes who participate in this tournament could potentially get a chance to play against some of the best players in the world during an AVP Championship tournament. For players, this is a huge deal. It means that they could possibly meet volleyball stars like Roan “The Beast” McArthur, who has been playing professionally for over 15 years!

For those of you who don’t know, the AVP stands for “Association of Volleyball Professionals” and it’s a governing body that oversees many different professional tournaments throughout the country each year. The association has been around since 1983 and has become more and more popular as each year goes by. Many volleyball players dream of being able to compete in one of these tournaments because they’re so prestigious and full of talent.

The NorCal Volleyball Association (NCVA) is one of the biggest volleyball associations in the country. They are responsible for bringing many of the top teams and athletes together in Northern California and Hawaii, and today they made history.

The NCVA released their rankings on Monday, but this was no ordinary ranking release. For the first time ever, the NCVA used a new method to rank teams: power ranking. This power ranking system will be used by all other associations across the country from now on, including USAV, AAU, and JVA among others.

According to the NCVA’s website, this new system “uses a statistical model that relies on game results to measure team performance.” Teams with more games played in the season have a better chance at receiving a higher power rating. The NCVA believes this is a more accurate way of determining team strength than the old point system they used before.

“All day long we had people going crazy when their number was called,” says tournament director Jenelle Koester. “As soon as their name was called, they would run on the court and the crowd would go wild. It was a very cool thing to experience and see.”
