Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. It has been estimated that more than half of the world’s population consider themselves to be association football (soccer) fans. Association football, commonly known as football or soccer, is a sport played between two teams of eleven players with a spherical ball. It is played by 250 million players in over 200 countries and dependencies, making it the world’s most popular sport.
The game is played on a rectangular field with a goal at each end. The object of the game is to score by getting the ball into the opposing goal. Players are not allowed to touch the ball with their hands or arms while it is in play, unless they are goalkeepers (and then only when within their penalty area). Other players mainly use their feet to strike or pass the ball, but may also use their head or torso. The team that scores the most goals by the end of the match wins. If the score is level at the end of the game, either a draw is declared or the game goes into extra time or a penalty shootout depending on the format of the competition. The Laws of the Game were originally codified in England by The Football Association in 1863. Association football is governed internationally by FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football
Soccer is a popular sport played all over the world. Even though it has only been popular in the United States for the past 30 years, soccer has been a long time favorite most everywhere else. The sport dates back to the Egyptians, who played games involving the kicking of a ball.
Soccer is played on a large grass field with a goal at each end. The object of the game is to get the soccer ball into the opposing team’s goal. Only the goalie may touch the ball with his hands, and only when he is inside his own penalty area. Players use their feet, knees, chest, and head to advance the ball down field and score points. Soccer games have two 45 minute halves and there is usually a 15 minute half-time break.
A soccer team has 11 players — one goalie and 10 others who can be forwards, mid-fielders, or defenders. In leagues throughout Europe, South America and Africa there are hundreds of professional soccer teams that play in various divisions depending on their skill level.
During the mid-1800s, soccer was a very rough sport. Players could trip each other, kick each other and even punch the ball (or their opponent). However, during the 1850’s, a man named Ebenezer Cobb Morley decided to launch an investigation into the world of soccer. He thought that the game needed some changes and in 1863 he made them.
Morley wrote up a list of 13 rules for soccer, which included “each side shall be allowed an equal number of players” and “the game shall be decided by goals only.” These rules were accepted by the Football Association in London and they formed the basics of soccer as we know it today.
Can you imagine how different the game would be if these rules weren’t in place? Soccer truly is a gentleman’s game!
When did soccer start?
Soccer’s early history is uncertain. It is assumed that the game was played earlier than this, but there is no direct evidence to prove it. The first written evidence of a ball game being played came in 200 B.C. in China during the Han Dynasty. The rules were strict and severe punishments were given out if anyone broke them.
A Chinese document from 50 BC mentions that when a man had passed the age of forty it was not permitted for him to play football as it was thought to be too rough and dangerous!
The Romans and Greeks also had a form of football which they called ‘Harpaston’. They used any part of the body except the hands and carried the ball only by throwing it into the air and kicking it.
The World Cup is the biggest and most important soccer tournament in the world. The first World Cup was held in 1930 in Uruguay, which went on to win the tournament. There have been 19 World Cups held every four years.
Soccer is known as football in most countries.
The first World Cup was held in 1930 and won by Uruguay. The last one was held in 2014 and won by Germany.
The next World Cup will be held in Russia in 2018.
In the 2014 World Cup, Germany beat Argentina 1-0 at Estadio Mario Alberto Kempes, Córdoba, to win the final match and become champions of the world for a fourth time.
More than 240 million people around the world play soccer regularly according to the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA).
The game has evolved from the sport of kicking a rudimentary animal-hide ball around into the World Cup sport it is today. Records trace the history of soccer back more than 2,000 years ago to ancient China. Greece, Rome, and parts of Central America also claim to have started the sport; but it was England that transitioned soccer, or what the British and many other people around the world call “football,” into the game we know today.
Early games appear to have had much in common with the traditional mob football played in England. The games played in the Middle Ages were more organized in terms of team play and scores than their predecessor. Players would attempt to move an inflated pig’s bladder by any means possible over city walls and into designated areas. This early form of soccer was also bloody and violent. In fact, many injuries occurred during these games as well as deaths.
In 1314, King Edward II banned soccer because he believed the sport to be too violent. However, this did not stop people from playing soccer for pleasure or for competition against neighboring villages. In some cases, villages would play each other once a year with rivalries
