Here’s one of the big questions for tonight’s trade deadline: Will the Orioles sell? We’re not sure yet, but we do know that they’ve been listening to offers for infielder Manny Machado. If that’s not a fire sale, what is?

The Orioles will listen to offers on any of their players except Adam Jones, according to ESPN.com’s Buster Olney (Twitter link). As Olney notes, it seems likely that the O’s will trade closer Zach Britton as well.

The Orioles are focused on starting pitching and outfield help in return for Machado, Bob Nightengale of USA Today tweets. Baltimore is hoping to land some combination of prospects and big leaguers who can help them compete in 2018.

Machado is hitting .313/.382/.560 this season with 23 homers and 65 RBIs. The 25-year-old is under contract through next season with a $16MM team option for 2019.

Pirates 3, Reds 1: That’s three wins in a row for the Bucs, and five out of six. They’ve got to be happy with that. Six games over .500 for the first time since 2011 is also pretty nice.

Diamondbacks 5, Mets 1: The Mets lost because Zack Greinke pitched so well the Diamondbacks couldn’t get him a run until the seventh inning. He didn’t get the win but he did get his 2,500th career strikeout on a punchout of Travis d’Arnaud

Angels 8, Mariners 6: A late four-run rally by the Mariners came up just short as Cam Bedrosian closed it out in the ninth. Albert Pujols homered twice and had three RBI while Andrelton Simmons went three for five with two doubles and a homer.

Royals 7, Twins 4: The Royals scored seven runs in their first three innings at bat and then held on to win it against their division rivals. I don’t think anyone expected this team to be this good this year, but it’s nice to see them make some noise in what is shaping up to be a very interesting AL Central race.

Baseball scores are very important to me!

Tracking scores is a fun way to spend my day.

I often trade players with friends and colleagues.

I am always researching the latest news and statistics.

There’s nothing better than sitting back, watching a game, and enjoying your favorite team win!

The Baseball Scorecard

Compute the number of games a baseball team has won given the number of runs they have scored.

Code Challenge: Solve this problem in O(n) time and O(1) space

Input: 1 -> 2 -> 3 -> 4 -> 5 -> null

Output: 15 (1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 = 15)

Input: 3 -> 5 -> 8 -> null

Output: 16 (3 + 5 + 8 = 16)

Input: 9 -> null

Output: 9 (9 = 9)

The money line is the most common wager. The money line is simply a bet on who will win the game. You don’t have to worry about the margin of victory, just who wins the game. If you bet Team A and they win, you win your bet. If you bet Team B and they lose, you lose your bet.

The point spread is a number set by odds makers. If the total is 100 and Team A is favored by -6, Team B is getting 6 points. The spread is a way to even out the action on both sides of the wager.

Futures bets are exactly what they sound like, a wager placed on an event that will occur in the future. As an example, let’s look at Super Bowl futures. For example, the Ravens may be 5-1, the Redskins 12-1, the Cardinals 100-1, etc. If you place $10 on the Redskins and they go on to win the Super Bowl, you collect $120 plus your $10 back for a total payoff of $130. It does not matter whether your team covers the point spread in the Super Bowl. For the purposes of future book betting, the team has to win only the Super Bowl.

The score 0-0 is called a “no hitter”.

The score 1-0 is called a “pitcher’s duel”.

The score 2-1 is called a “pitcher’s battle”.

The score 3-2 is called a “pitchers’ duel”.

The score 4-3 is called a “pitching duel” or a “pitchers’ battle”.

The score 5-4 is called a “slugfest” or, in an extra-inning game, an “epic”.
