It’s going to happen. Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather will fight. As soon as I heard Mayweather was coming out of retirement, I knew it was a done deal. If Mayweather isn’t fighting Pacquiao in what would have been the most lucrative fight in boxing history, then he’s fighting McGregor in the UFC. And like most of us, I wasn’t sure how that was going to go for the Irishman.
Well, now we know. Yesterday it was announced that Dana White has granted McGregor his boxing license from the state of California. This means that “The Notorious One” is basically good to go for a boxing match against anyone with a similar license…like Floyd Mayweather.
This is so big for both sports: MMA and Boxing:
The most interesting aspect of the proposed fight between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor is that both men are going to make a lot of money. There will be a boxing match, but it’s business first, sport second.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with Conor McGregor, he is the UFC Lightweight Champion and a former UFC Featherweight Champion. He’s also one of the most dominant fighters on the planet. And Floyd Mayweather? He’s the best boxer in the world, with a 49-0 record.
The fight will be a boxing match, and Mayweather is heavily favored to win. But McGregor wasn’t given the nickname “Mystic Mac” for nothing – he has an uncanny ability to predict the outcome of his fights, and it’s hard not to wonder if he might have some chance against Mayweather.
If you’re a fan of combat sports, this is one match you don’t want to miss!
If you’ve heard this story before, don’t stop me, because I’d like to hear it again.
On Wednesday night, the UFC lightweight champion, who has never boxed professionally but is known for his striking prowess, went on ESPN and said that he had signed a contract to fight the undefeated former pound-for-pound king in a boxing match.
The announcement was not unexpected. McGregor first said that he could beat Mayweather in a boxing match back in May 2016, when the retired boxer was still very much retired. In June, Floyd Mayweather Sr., the undefeated boxer’s father and trainer, confirmed that he thought such a fight would happen and that Mayweather would win easily. The day after Mayweather Sr. made those comments, Mayweather Jr. told FightHype.com that “it’s possible” that he would come back and fight McGregor next.
So when McGregor stood up at the press conference on Wednesday night and announced that he had signed a deal to fight Mayweather—a fight whose existence McGregor made a condition of his return to MMA—it felt less like an announcement about an upcoming event than a confirmation of something we already knew was going to happen.
It was always a matter of when. And now it’s finally a matter of where. According to Dana White, the UFC and boxing will collide in Las Vegas this August. “The McGregor side is done,” White told TMZ. “I’m starting to work on the Mayweather side now. I’m not saying the fight will happen, but we’re closer than we’ve ever been.”
After months of negotiation, both Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor have agreed to terms on their much-anticipated bout, which will take place on August 26 in Las Vegas at MGM Grand Garden Arena. The fight will be contested at 154 pounds with 8-ounce gloves. If you want tickets to this fight, you can register right here.
