Contested by 20 clubs, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the English Football League (EFL).

Most games are played on Saturdays and Sundays, with a few games played during weekday evenings. Play is regularly suspended on weekends during international fixtures and during selected other events. It is colloquially known as the Premiership and outside the UK it is commonly referred to as the English Premier League (EPL). The competition forms an integral part of the FA Community Shield, the oldest football competition in England.

The EPL season runs from August to May every year with each team playing 38 matches. Each team plays twice against their 19 opponents. Three points are awarded for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a loss. The teams are ranked by total points, goal difference and goals scored. In the event that two or more teams finish equal on points, goal difference and goals scored, then head-to-head records are used to separate them.

The team with the highest number of points at the end of the season is crowned as league champion. If points are equal then goal difference decides who wins. If goal difference is equal then goals scored decides who wins.
