12 Ways to Use a Trainer Sock for Volleyball

When used for training, the trainer sock can be a huge help in improving your volleyball skills. A trainer sock — also known as an ankle trainer — is a sock with a Velcro strap that allows you to slide the sock up or down to expose or cover a portion of the foot. Here are 12 ways to use a trainer sock for volleyball:

1. Hitting. Slide the sock up to cover your toes and use it to practice hitting with just your foot (no shoe).

2. Passing. Slide the sock down over your heel and practice passing using just the heel of your foot (no shoe).

3. Setting. Practice setting without bending your knees by setting off of your toe while wearing the trainer sock (no shoe). This will force you to set using only arm motion, which will help you learn how to set more accurately with less effort.

If you look in the sock drawer of any volleyball player, you’ll find a pair or two of trainer socks. These socks are extra long and have one rubber band around the arch. They are used for keeping shin guards in place, but there are many more ways to use them.

1.Shoe lace keeper – Keep shoes from coming untied by wrapping a trainer sock around the laces.

2.Sandals – Make sandals out of old sneakers by cutting off all but the toe and heel sections, then put on a pair of trainer socks to secure them to your feet.

3.Sweatbands – Cut off the toe section and wear it on your wrist or forehead to keep sweat out of your eyes, or in your hair to keep it out of your face.

4.Ankle brace – Wrap one around an ankle that is sore or healing from injury, or just because you like how it feels!

One of the most common socks that volleyball players own is a trainer sock. Trainer socks are extremely versatile and can be used for many things, not just keeping your feet warm.

Squeeze a tennis ball between your knees while doing sit-ups. It helps strengthen your legs and works on a technique needed to pass a volleyball.

Hold the tennis ball in your hands and squeeze it until you can’t squeeze anymore, then relax. Do this several times to strengthen your forearms. Forearms are important when passing the ball.

Tie a knot in the sock and hold one end in each hand. Pull on it for about 10 seconds at a time to strengthen your fingers.

Lay down on the floor with one leg straight with the sock under your foot, pull up with your toes by scrunching them, hold for about five seconds and then relax. You should feel the stretch in the calf muscle of that leg. Do this for about five minutes or so, then switch legs and sides, doing four sets of each side per day (the next day start over again). This is great for shin splints and helps prevent future injuries.

8. Use the trainer sock as a knee pad to protect yourself from carpet burns when diving for a ball (though I don’t recommend doing this unless you’re sure that there’s no other way to get to the ball).
